Assembly Area Information for South Antrim AA (9514) - 1998 Boundary

Profile last updated October 2011.

Please note that the Assembly Area Profile Reports are based on the Assembly Area (1998) boundaries which are the same as the Parliamentary Constituency (1992) boundaries. Following the commencement of the official election period on 25th March 2011 the Assembly Areas in Northern Ireland have been re-aligned with the 2008 Westminster Parliamentary Constituency Boundaries.

In practice the Assembly Area 2011/Westminster Parliamentary Constituency 2008 boundaries are not very different to their predecessors. Six of the 18 Assembly Areas are unchanged. The degree of change, based on the population estimates in 2008, range from a 21.1% increase in population size to a 12.8% decrease in population size. The following report is based on South Antrim Assembly Area (1998 Boundary). South Antrim Assembly Area (2011) has a different boundary and an 8.8% smaller population than the South Antrim Assembly Area (1998) , based on the 2008 Population Estimates.

All data in this profile refers to the 1998 Assembly Area / 1992 Parliamentary Constituency boundaries.

The Inter-Departmental Urban-Rural Definition Group have classified each settlement in Northern Ireland into one of eight bands (A-H). Bands A-E can be defined as urban and Bands F-H as rural and Census 2001 key statistics were produced for those settlements with over 500 people. Demography


On Census Day 29th April 2001 the resident population of South Antrim AA was 99810. Of this population:
  • 23.1% were under 16 years old and 16.2% were aged 60 and over;
  • 49.4% of the population were male and 50.6% were female;
  • 29.7% were from a Catholic community background and 66.0% were from a 'Protestant and Other Christian (including Christian related)' community background;
  • 29.3% of persons aged 16 and over were single (never married);
  • 35.7 years was the average age of the population; and
  • the population density was 1.40 persons per hectare.
The estimated population of South Antrim AA at 30 June 2010 was 108822, an increase of of 8.5% on the 2001 mid-year population of 100319.

In South Antrim there were 1530 resident births registered in 2009. Of these, 789 were male births and 741 were female births and 536 births were to unmarried mothers. The median age of mothers of new-born babies in 2009 was 30 and of fathers was 32. The teenage birth rate per 1,000 of females aged 13 to 19 was 16.2.

In total 702 deaths were registered in 2009 in South Antrim AA. Of these 702 deaths, 41.5% were to under 75 years old. The median age at death was 78.0 in 2009.

There were a total of 5729 offences recorded in South Antrim AA in 2010/11. The rates per 10,000 population by type of crime are shown below:
  • Violent Crimes (offences against the person, sexual offences and robbery) - 1391 offences recorded, rate of 127.8 per 10,000 population.
  • Sexual Offences - 104 offences recorded, rate of 9.6 per 10,000 population;
  • Burglary - 811 offences recorded, rate of 74.5 per 10,000 population;
  • Criminal Damage - 1575 offences recorded, rate of 144.7 per 10,000 population;

Education and Training


On Census Day, in South Antrim AA looking at the population aged 16-74:
  • 15.3% had degree level or higher qualifications; and
  • 57.6% had no or low levels of qualifications. 1
1Low levels of qualifications are those categorised as Level 1 which include; GCSE (grades D-G), CSE (grades 2-5), 1-4 CSEs (grade 1), 1-4 GCSEs (grades A-C), 1-4 'O' level passes, NVQ level 1, GNVQ Foundation or equivalents.

For school leavers aged 16 and over in 2010, 74.2% achieved at least 5 or more GCSEs at grade C and above, 41.0% went on into Higher Education and 36.3% went into Further Education in South Antrim AA.

In South Antrim AA there were 3570 students enrolled at a Higher Education college in 2009/10. Higher Education can be defined as education at a higher level than secondary school, usually provided in universities. Of all students enrolled, 68.9% were full time and 31.1% were part time students, while 58.9% were female and 41.1% were male. In total, 42.3% were aged 20 and under, 27.3% were aged 21-24 and 30.4% were aged 25 and over.

In South Antrim AA there were 7414 students enrolled at a Further Education college in 2009/10. Further Education can be defined as post-secondary education that is distinct from the education offered in universities. Of all students enrolled, 16.1% were full time and 83.9% were part time students, while 46.8% were female and 53.2% were male. In total, 52.4% were aged 19 and under, 13.6% were aged 20-25 and 34.0% were aged 26 and over.

School Census data for 2010/11 (by pupil residence) in South Antrim AA shows that 12.6% of pupils in post-primary schools are categorised as Statemented or with Special Education Needs (SEN) Stage 1 to 4. Statemented pupils are those pupils with a statement of special educational needs, i.e. pupils at stage 5 on the Special Educational Needs (SEN) Code of Practice.

The Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) measures general practice achievement against a range of evidence-based indicators and provides raw disease prevalence data by a total of 17 clinical areas. In 2011, the raw prevalence of patients aged 18 plus (per 1,000 patients) on the Learning Disabilities Register was 6.4 for South Antrim AA.

In 2010/11 in South Antrim AA, 10.1% of pupils in post-primary schools had Free School Meal Entitlement (based on pupil residence data).

Employment, Economic Activity and Social Welfare


On Census Day 29th April 2001, in South Antrim AA looking at the population aged 16-74:
  • 68.4% were economically active, 31.6% were economically inactive; and
  • 2.8% were unemployed, of these 34.2% were long-term unemployed.1

The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment were notified of a total of 118 confirmed redundancies in South Antrim AA in 2010.

For South Antrim in 2011 4.1% of working age adults and 11.1% children under 16 were living in Income Support households.

The Census of Employment is a statutory survey that is conducted every two years in Northern Ireland. It provides information on the nature and characteristics of non-agricultural businesses. In 2009 there were 43212 employee jobs in businesses located in South Antrim AA.

Of these:
  • 44.0% jobs were male full-time;
  • 23.1% jobs were female full-time;
  • 8.3% jobs were male part-time; and
  • 24.6% jobs were female part-time.
The Farm Census 2010 recorded 869 farms registered to addresses in South Antrim AA and the total agricultural labour force was 1768 persons.

The Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) provides a wide range of information on hourly, weekly and annual earnings of employees in Northern Ireland. The median wage measures the amount earned by the average individual i.e. the level of earnings above which half the population fall. The median gross weekly earnings for all employees in South Antrim in 2010 was £ 362. For males the median wage was £ 426 and for females it was £ 307.1.

Deprivation - NIMDM 2010


The Northern Ireland Multiple Deprivation Measure 2010 (NIMDM 2010) report was published in May 2010. The report identifies small area concentrations of multiple deprivation across Northern Ireland. The results for South Antrim AA are shown below.

South Antrim AA has an Extent of 5%, this means that 5% of the South Antrim population live in the most deprived Super Output Areas in Northern Ireland.

The Income Scale shows that there are 17851 people in South Antrim AA experiencing income deprivation, while the Employment scale shows that a total of 6307 people in South Antrim AA experience employment deprivation.

Both the Income Scale and the Employment Scale can be presented as rates of the relevant populations to aid comparisons across areas. 17% of the total population in South Antrim AA were identified as income deprived while 10% of the working age population were identified as employment deprived. This can be compared to NI as a whole where 25% were identified as income deprived and 13% employment deprived.

Health and Care


On Census Day 29th April 2001, in South Antrim AA:
  • 17.5% of people had a limiting long-term illness, health problem or disability;
  • 72.4% of people stated that their general health was good; and
  • 10.8% of the population stated that they provided unpaid care to family, friends, neighbours or others.
Average life expectancy measures the expected years of life at birth based on the mortality rates of the period in question. Life expectancy for males in South Antrim AA for 2007-2009 is 78.1 years and for females is 82.1 years.

In total, 702 people died in 2009 in South Antrim.Of all deaths, 184 ( 26.2%) were due to malignant neoplasms, 210 ( 29.9%) were to circulatory disease and 104.0 ( 14.8%) were to respiratory disease.

Average death rates are available from 2004 to 2008 standardised for age to the 2006 Population Estimates. In South Antrim AA the age standardised death rate (per 100,000 persons) for the population under 75 years of age was 366.0 for males and 252.4 for females. The table below shows average death rates by cause for the population under 75 years of age.

Data is recorded on the number of deaths due to suicide and undetermined intent. In South Antrim AA there were 12 such deaths registered in 2009.

In South Antrim AA there were:
  • 12 alcohol-related deaths (underlying cause of death is recorded as deaths with a clear causal relationship to alcohol consumption) in 2009; and

On Census Day 29th April 2001 there were 36725 households in South Antrim AA. Of these households:
  • 77.0% were owner occupied and 23.0% were rented;

  • 3.7% of households were without central heating or without sole use of bath/shower/toilet or without both;

  • 2.7 persons per household was the average household size.
