Strabane LGD falls within the Western Health and Social Care Trust and the Western Education and Library Board.
The Inter-Departmental Urban-Rural Definition Group have classified each settlement in Northern Ireland into one of eight bands (A-H). Bands A-E can be defined as urban and Bands F-H as rural and Census 2001 key statistics were produced for those settlements with over 500 people. On Census Day 29th April 2001 the resident population of Strabane LGD was 38248. Of this population:- 26.0% were under 16 years old and 15.9% were aged 60 and over;
- 50.0% of the population were male and 50.0% were female;
- 66.2% were from a Catholic community background and 33.3% were from a 'Protestant and Other Christian (including Christian related)' community background;
- 35.2% of persons aged 16 and over were single (never married);
- 34.2 years was the average age of the population; and
- the population density was 0.44 persons per hectare.

The estimated population of Strabane LGD at 30 June 2010 was 40099, a decrease of 0.6% on the 2009 population of 39871 and 4.8% on the 2001 mid-year population estimate of 38273.
In 2021 the population of Strabane LGD is projected to be 41896 persons - this is based on the 2006 mid-year estimates of the population.

In Strabane LGD there were 582 resident births registered in 2009. Of these, 287 were male births and 295 were female births and 41.1% births were to unmarried mothers. The Total Period Fertility Rate (TPFR) is the average number of children a woman would have in her lifetime if she experienced, throughout her childbearing years, the fertility rates of the calendar years in question. In western countries a TPFR of 2.1 is required to maintain long-term population levels, assuming no migration. The TPFR in 2007-2009 for Strabane LGD was 2.00.
In total 293 deaths were registered in 2009 in Strabane LGD, of these 121 ( 41.3%) were under 75 years old. The median age at death was 77.
The Standardised Mortality Ratio is a method of comparing mortality in different populations, while allowing for differences in the age structure of these populations. The Northern Ireland rate is set equal to 100 and a value greater than 100 indicates above average mortality. In Strabane LGD the Standardised Mortality Ratio from 2007-2009 for all ages was 106.0.

There were 1474 incidents of anti-social behaviour reported in Strabane LGD in 2010/11.
Hate incidents are defined as any incident which is perceived by the victim, or any other person, as being motivated by prejudice or hate. The hate motivation definitions used are racist (a group of persons defined by reference to race, colour, nationality or ethnic or national origins and includes the Irish Traveller community), sectarian (a term almost exclusively used in Northern Ireland to describe incidents of bigoted dislike or hatred of members of a different religious or political group) and homophobic (fear or dislike directed towards lesbian, gay or bisexual people, or a fear or dislike directed towards their perceived lifestyle, culture or characteristics). In Strabane in 2010/11, there were 4 racist, 9 sectarian and 1 homophobic incidents.
Domestic abuse motivated incidents are defined as any incident of threatening behaviour, violence, or abuse (phychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional) by one family member against another or adults who are or have been intimate partners, regardless of gender, and whether a crime has occurred or not. Domestic abuse motivated crimes are included in the incident figures, more than one crime may be recorded in a single incident and in Strabane in 2010/11, there were 218 such incidents.

On Census Day 29th April 2001, in Strabane LGD looking at the population aged 16-74:- 9.3% had degree level or higher qualifications; and
- 69.9% had no or low levels of qualifications. 1

In Strabane LGD, school examination results show that:- 84.7% of primary school pupils achieved the expected Key Stage 2 levels in Maths and 83.5% in English in 2009/10;
- 83.7% of primary school pupils achieved the expected Key Stage 2 levels in Maths and 82.9% in English in the most disadvantaged2 schools in 2009/10;
- Based on pupil residence, 67.8% of school leavers in 2009/10 achieved 5 or more GCSEs (Grade A*-C).
- Based on pupil residence, 0.5 of school leavers in 2009/10 achieved no GCSEs.

Of school leavers aged 16 and over in 2009/10, 45.4% went on into Higher Education and 31.1% went into Further Education in Strabane LGD.
In Strabane LGD there were 1360 students enrolled at a Higher Education college in 2009/10. Higher Education can be defined as education at a higher level than secondary school, usually provided in universities. Of all students enrolled, 76.5% were full time and 23.5% were part time students, while 61.0% were female and 39.0% were male. In total, 45.6% were aged 20 and under, 29.7% were aged 21-24 and 24.7% were aged 25 and over.
In Strabane LGD there were 3575 students enrolled at a Further Education college in 2009/10. Further Education can be defined as post-secondary education that is distinct from the education offered in universities. Of all students enrolled, 16.3% were full time and 83.7% were part time students, while 54.2% were female and 45.8% were male. In total, 57.2% were aged 19 and under, 12.2% were aged 20-25 and 30.6% were aged 26 and over.
School Census data for 2010/11 (by pupil residence) in Strabane LGD shows that 17.2% of pupils in post-primary schools are categorised as Statemented or with Special Education Needs (SEN) Stage 1 to 4. On Census Day 29th April 2001, in Strabane LGD looking at the population aged 16-74:- 56.4% were economically active, 43.6% were economically inactive; and

The Census of Employment is a statutory survey that is conducted every two years in Northern Ireland. It provides information on the nature and characteristics of non-agricultural businesses. In 2009 there were 8984 employee jobs in businesses located in Strabane.
Of these:- 36.5% jobs were male full-time;
- 24.2% jobs were female full-time;
- 9.8% jobs were male part-time; and
- 29.5% jobs were female part-time.
The Inter Departmental Business Register (IDBR) showed there were 1940 VAT Registered Businesses in Strabane in 2010. Of these, 40.7% were within the Agricultural sector, 16.5% within the Construction sector and 4.9% within the Property and Business Services sectors.
The Farm Census 2010 recorded 1221 farms registered to addresses in Strabane and the total agricultural labour force was 2293 persons.
The Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) provides a wide range of information on hourly, weekly and annual earnings of employees in Northern Ireland.The median wage measures the amount earned by the average individual i.e. the level of earnings above which half the population fall.The median gross weekly earnings for all employees in Strabane in 2010 was £ 259.2. Deprivation - NIMDM 2010
The Northern Ireland Multiple Deprivation Measure 2010 (NIMDM 2010) report was published in May 2010. The report identifies small area concentrations of multiple deprivation across Northern Ireland. The results for Strabane LGD are shown below.
Strabane LGD has an Extent of 44%, this means that 44% of the Strabane population live in the most deprived Super Output Areas in Northern Ireland.
The Income Scale shows that there are 14394 people in Strabane LGD experiencing income deprivation, while the Employment scale shows that a total of 4603 people in Strabane LGD experience employment deprivation.

Average life expectancy measures the expected years of life at birth based on the mortality rates of the period in question. Life expectancy for males in Strabane LGD for 2007-2009 is 76.6 years and for females is 79.8 years.

Standardised admission rates to hospitals are available for all hospital admissions by type and by cause. The Northern Ireland rate is set equal to 100 and a value greater than 100 indicates an above average standardised admission rate. On Census Day 29th April 2001 there were 12974 households in Strabane LGD. Of these households:- 66.6% were owner occupied and 33.4% were rented;
- 32.6% were owned outright;
- 11.5% were lone pensioner households;
- 8.8% were lone parents households with dependent children;
- 8.9% of households were without central heating or without sole use of bath/shower/toilet or without both;
- 11.3% of households had an occupancy rating of -1 or less (i.e. classed as overcrowded);1 and
- 2.9 persons per household was the average household size.

Environmental statistics show that in Strabane LGD 26.1% of household waste was recycled and composted in 2009/10 and 23.8% of municipal waste was recycled and composted.
